We are often asked to recommend a destination that is close to Australia, easy to get to and suitable for families.  If you live on the East Coast then Fiji fits the bill.  There are plenty of flights with Qantas, Air Pacific, Jetstar and Pacific Blue from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.  If you can, choose a daytime flight as some airlines have overnight flights which mean an early morning arrival into Fiji and your hotel room might not be ready to check-in to.  There’s nothing worse than cranky kids who haven’t slept on the flight who then have to stay awake until 2pm before you can get into your room.

Fiji is a fantastic holiday destination for families, with hotels offering great family friendly accommodation such as self-catering villas or traditional Fijian thatched bures on the beach. An apartment with kitchen facilities is handy for a family, especially with small children if you need to warm bottles or food plus the extra space and separate bedroom and living areas allow space for some quiet time while the kids are resting. The Fijian locals are so good with kids – we love to holiday with our children but sometimes we need a little away time, and a resort with a kids club is a great choice. There are scheduled sessions and activities, and even private babysitting so the grown-ups can have a little private time.

Denarau Island is located a short 15 minute drive from the airport and is home to many resorts as well as the Denarau Golf & Racquet Club and the Port Denarau Marina. Most sightseeing cruises depart from the Marina for day trips to the outer islands. The Marina also offers a range of dining and shopping options.  The Sheraton Denarau Villas have one, two and three bedroom villas with fully equipped kitchens, laundry and separate sleeping and living areas. 

There are many popular family resorts on the southern coast of Fiji’s main island, Viti Levu. The ‘Coral Coast’ is the perfect base from which you can explore Fiji. There’s only one main road around the island so hire a car for the day – it is difficult to get lost. The Coral Coast resorts offer some of the best restaurants and golf courses on the island.  The Intercontinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa is set amongst 35 acres of lush tropical grounds and on its own white sandy beach.  There are four swimming pools, six restaurants and bars and Planet Trekkers Kids Club for the little ones aged 3-12 years.   Accommodation ranges from hotel rooms through to two bedroom beachfront villas – some with private plunge pool.

If you want the true ‘deserted island’ feel, then head out to the Mamanuca Islands, a ferry or catamaran ride from the mainland.  This group of islands is surrounded by crystal clear waters, white sandy beaches and the island resorts offer the perfect tropical escape.  Mana Island Resort and Spa is a 300 acre tropical island paradise.  Spend the days doing watersports activities such as banana boat rides, parasailing and snorkelling then at night relax by the Pool Bar and watch the sun set.  Head to your  beachfront bure to get ready for the next day of fun in the sun!
