Floriade 300x210 Holiday fun in Canberra 4 reasons it gets our vote If all you ever saw of Canberra were news clips of politicians nagging about one thing or another, you’d never believe that there’s a whole lotta holiday fun to be had in our nation’s capital.

But since we’re not after your vote, and have no intention of kissing your baby, is there really any reason not to trust us?

Floriade

You won’t need to lift a green thumb to enjoy the splendour of Canberra’s annual flower extravaganza , running 17 September to 16 October.

Along with a relaxing waltz amongst a million plus blooms in themed garden beds, there are all kinds of exciting events to check out.

On 2 and 3 October there’s the Carnival in the Park, with everything  from Latin to Janapese fusion, while roving circus performers and a petting zoo with baby animals will keep the kids entertained.

And a bit of romance is sure to blossom around the NightFest stalls, comedy shows and live jazz.

Retire to the 1920s heritage Hyatt Canberra. Experience a Floriade of the buffet kind at their Promenade Cafe, filled with oysters, roasts, desserts and more —or don the headband and whites for a game of tennis.

CSIRO Discovery Centre

Fancy yourself as a bit of a mad scientist? Then this is the place for you (and the kids, if you have them) to get a taste of the tireless work that goes into Australia’s scientific discoveries.

See research in action and do some experiments of your own in the Optuslab (like crossing a politician with a human or something).

The exhibition has uniquely presented displays about Australia and the CSIRO’s science history in things like health, wellbeing, energy and climate.

The Mantra On Northbourne Canberra Apartments has one and two-bedroom apartments with kitchenettes, ideal for families who want some personal space.

National Film and Sound Archive

Feel like you’re exploring the sets of famous Aussie films past and present at the NFSA. Play on the free interactive displays and check out all the thought-provoking exhibitions of costumes, photographs, films and sounds clips.

You can also catch free screenings in the theatrette and regular live presentations from movie gurus.

Future Oscar winners of the Shirley Temple size can draw their own film strip at the Pause and Play exhibition—and you can stock up on your favourite movie posters and DVDs at the shop.

The Pavilion on Northbourne Hotel Canberra has a great outdoor pool and BBQ on the deck. But if flipping steaks sounds a little too stage hand for your holiday, stroll the red carpet to the tranquil and lush atrium restaurant and bar.

National Zoo and Aquarium

No, we don’t mean the House of Representatives and Senate during sittings. We’re talking about the real zoo with it’s own collection of big cats, giraffes and bears.

The Zooventure tour is a thrill for older kids and adults. During the two hour adventure you can hand-feed a tiger, feel your paw being licked honey-free by brown bears, and get a big, friendly hug from a python - amongst lots of other fun for the whole family.

If you’re a cat person, try out the popular Meet-a-Cheetah experience where you can even pat these spotty Usain Bolts of the feline world.

Tarzan and Jane’s can keep fit at the Crowne Plaza, with its Pro-Fit health club and swimming pool—before a wildly relaxing massage.
