Skateboarder 200x300 East Asian Festival stir fry mix just add shadow puppets and skater boys

If you hadn’t noticed, East Asia is a pretty big place. And with all those unique countries squeezed inside, it’s just about impossible to sum up as a holiday destination. But ask us (so glad you did!) and we like to think of it as a delicious blend of history, cultural tradition and love of all things modern, stir fried and served with lashings of fun and thrills – often in the most unexpected places. A bit like this mix of June Asian festivals really…

Sure, Bali is a party, but there’s more than one way to do it. The Bali Arts Festival from June 11 to July 09 has all kinds of dancing, art and music to spice up your senses, including funky shadow puppets and local masked dances.

Saying all that, you’ll want some rest with your recreation and the Padma Resort Balia At Legian, has tennis courts, swimming pools, spas, bars, restaurants and kids clubs.

Contrary to popular myth, sand is good for more than sticking in egg timers and other people’s swimming costumes. Case in point – the Busan Haeundae Sand Festival at Busan, South Korea from 3-6 June. Take a hot sand bath, cheer on the beach volleyballers and closely inspect the sand exhibits from around the world while waiting for the evening fireworks and concerts to start.

Stay a grain away from the action at the Sunset Business Hotel Busan, where you can clog up the whirlpool bath after an active day at the beach.

Get amongst the outdoor musical theatre atmosphere of the Festival of Takigi Noh in Kyoto on 1-2 June.  In evening performances, surrounded by burning torches at the Heian Jingi shrine, you can watch actors put on spine-chilling minimalist performances between lively interval comic dramas. And then, of course, there’s Kyoto’s equally impressive cuisine and sights.

Get a taste of the whole package with sushi and sashimi at the Westin Miyako Hotel, overlooking the Japanese garden.

Watch the “sickest”  skater boys and girls at the Vans Go Skateboarding Day in Beijing in June. These crazy kids do all kinds of gnarly tricks that the rest of us would be locked up in a padded cell for merely suggesting, such as Godzilla Flips, Shove Its, Monster Walks and Broken Fingers —all for the street cred and prize.

Loosen up after your day of neck-twisting action with a sauna at the Hotel Kapok Beijing.
