If you hadn’t noticed, East Asia is a pretty big place. And with all those unique countries squeezed inside, it’s just about impossible to sum up as a holiday destination. Contrary to popular myth, sand is good for more than sticking in egg timers and other people’s swimming costumes. Case in point – the Busan Haeundae Sand Festival at Busan, South Korea from 3-6 June. Take a hot sand bath, cheer on the beach volleyballers and closely inspect the sand exhibits from around the world while waiting for the evening fireworks and concerts to start.

Get amongst the outdoor musical theatre atmosphere of the Festival of Takigi Noh in Kyoto on 1-2 June.  In evening performances, surrounded by burning torches at the Heian Jingi shrine, you can watch actors put on spine-chilling minimalist performances between lively interval comic dramas. And then, of course, there’s Kyoto’s equally impressive cuisine and sights.

Watch the “sickest”  skater boys and girls at the Vans Go Skateboarding Day in Beijing in June.
