The buff and the beautiful – holiday adventures in America

Posted by Simon

Snorkel, Hike and Bike, Oahu Surfing Lesson, Miami Sea Kayking, Vancouver

Let’s get physical! Make the most of your heartbeats running, jumping, and swimming on a fit n fabulous holiday. Exercise isn’t just for Olympians and gym jocks – you can work up a bit of huff and puff whilst experiencing some of North America’s most exhilerating and beautiful sights.

Say aloha to some heart-pumping action from rainforest to reef in an Oahu Bike, Hike, Sail and Snorkel Combo tour. Start off with a hearty hike through exquisite rainforests, then sail and snorkel in the Pacific Ocean, finishing off with a pedal on a paved road, surrounded by incredible local wildlife. The day is full of fitness opportunities, as well as dolphin spotting and learning about Hawaiian culture. And if you’re a glutton for glutes of steel, the Precor fitness centre at the Hilton Waikiki Prince Kuhio Hotel has headphones, towels, water and exercise machines with personal TV screens.

Beeeep! is the noise associated with New York City (translation: “Get out of the way ya bum!”). And while the Big Apple is chockablock full of road traffic, it’s a great place to get in some pedal power with a bike tour through Central Park. As you work out those legs, your eyes can relax and take in famous sites such as Strawberry Fields, Belvedere Castle and Shakespeare garden. As for day two… the Affinia 50 Hotel offers guests complimentary ‘Experience Kits’, such as the StayFit kit, which includes a yoga mat, DVDs about Pilates and Bootcamp, wrist and ankle weights and a StreetWise city map.

Don’t get left in Canada without a paddle. Take a two-seater guided kayak adventure from Vancouver, where you’ll see a range of ecosystems, from ocean to glacial fjords. Work up an appetite for the salmon barbeque lunch on an uninhabited island, then continue as your expert guides spot wildlife such as eagles and harbour seals along the way. Inspired by dreams of your rugged outdoor adventuring, you can wake in the middle of the night at the Opus Hotel and workout at their 24-hour fitness centre, complete with LCD TVs and modern cardio equipment.

Get your pecs on deck with a one-hour private surfing lesson in Miami, Florida. An expert instructor gets you vertical for some gnarly boarding, or if you’re already on your way to Pro, learn some techniques to rival Senor Slater. Recover with a steak feast at the Marriott JW Miami hotel’s Grimpa Steakhouse, followed by an on-site spa body wrap and massage to loosen up those tired muscles.

Apparently, it’s possible to walk over 100,000 miles in a lifetime. Obviously, whoever said that never heard of the TV remote control. But if you’d rather experience National Geographic than watch it then we suggest you go take a hike. Hiking is an easy exercise and you get all the benefits of the great outdoors. A fantastic organised hike is a tour of Yosemite National Park from San Francisco where you’ll see the sights of the Sierra Nevada Range and Vernal Falls. Then head back to the Serrano Hotel, where you can enjoy a dry sauna, some personal training at the gym or just put your feet up on the couch and give that thumb a workout with some serious channel surfing.
