AAA Tourism is a company owned by Australia’s Auto Clubs and manages the renowned quality certification scheme for the Australian accommodation industry – the Australian STAR Rating Scheme.  Over 11,000 Australian accommodation properties are certified in this scheme.

A recent initiative from AAA Tourism is ‘Green STAR Accreditation’ for properties.  The standards from Green STAR Accreditation were developed by AAA Tourism in partnership with Green Globe, an internationally recognised certification and performance improvement program.  Each property must meet strict guidelines in several key environmental criteria relating to rooms, facilities, grounds and office management.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY – energy efficient light bulbs and fixtures, zoned heating and cooling, signage reminding guests to turn off lights and air-conditioning, weather seals on doors and windows, and natural ventilation options.

WASTE MINIMISATION – recycling program, towel re-use option, linen no-change option, printer cartridge recycling.

WATER MANAGEMENT – dual flush toilets, environmentally friendly cleaning products, unbleached paper products, no leaking taps, water efficient dishwasher, use of recycled water on gardens.

There is a growing interest in ‘environmentally friendly’ properties.  Consumers are increasingly environmentally conscious and keen to support businesses encouraging socially responsible busines practices.   There are over 330 on the current list of Green STAR Accreditated properties.
